What is an implant?

Implants are screws made of titanium that are used in the treatment of missing teeth and placed inside the jawbone. A dental prosthesis is placed on these screws. The advantage of implant treatment over other treatments is that neighboring teeth are not damaged. So the adjacent teeth do not need to be cut. The implant acts as a tooth root and you can eat, talk and laugh like a natural tooth. Dental implant surgery also includes a surgical process that replaces tooth roots with metal, screw-like posts and replaces damaged or missing teeth with artificial teeth that look and function much like real teeth. A dental implant can offer a welcome alternative to poorly fitting dentures or bridges and is therefore more preferable to methods such as traditional bridges.

Initial Inspection and Planning

With the first examination in implant treatment, we determine whether the patient is compatible with this treatment. Our doctors examine the inside of the mouth in detail. A detailed examination is made such as gums, lower and upper jaws, the condition of the teeth, their suitability for the implant. After the inspection, planning begins. All details such as how many implants will be used, the structure of the implants, the type of dental prosthesis to be made on it are planned. We detail this planning by taking the image of the chin with three-dimensional tomography. Thus, we determine the area where the implant will be applied with the least error and start a process that will satisfy the patient.

Implant Operation Stage

Implant operation is performed by our specialist dentists with the most appropriate planning for the patient. Before the operation, the tooth and jaw area is stimulated with local anesthesia. With the appropriate surgical instruments, the slots where the implant will be applied are opened and the implant is placed in these slots. In the sutured implant process, an incision is made in the gingival part, the bone is reached and screwed. After the implant is placed, the operation in this area is completed by suturing. The complete completion of the operation process varies up to 3 months depending on the patient and the number of implants to be applied. It is expected that the implant, which is inserted in approximately 15-40 minutes, integrates with the jawbone, and then the dental prosthesis is completed with the material to be covered.

Recovery Period

The unsuccessful implant rate is around 5% worldwide. Apart from this, the implant operations that are usually performed successfully fuse to the jawbone and the patient continues to use the implant, which is made like his own tooth, without any problems. 2 – 2.5 months for the lower jaw after the operation; After 3-4 months for the upper jaw, the implant fully integrates with the bone.

Placing the Implant

After local anesthesia is given to the patient, implant placement is performed as planned. In some patients, the jawbone may not be sufficient. In such cases, since tissue addition may be required, implant treatment is applied by performing general anesthesia.

Making the Prosthesis

After the necessary diagnosis and planning are made in the implant treatment, the prosthesis preparation phase is started. At this stage, a prosthesis is designed considering the patient's personal tastes and the condition of their existing teeth. Intraoral measurement is taken. A color that will look compatible with other teeth is decided. Afterwards, the prosthesis is prepared to adapt to the existing teeth of the patient.

Can an implant be placed immediately after tooth extraction?

The implant can be placed immediately after tooth extraction in appropriate cases. Although the shortening of the treatment period provides great comfort for the patient, while making this decision; The number of roots of the extracted tooth, the shape and size of the extraction socket, the gingival and bone support around the extraction site, whether there is an acute infection and the primary retention of the implant when it is placed in the bone are carefully evaluated.

Who can not get dental implants?

To patients and pregnant women who have not completed their growth and development,
Patients who are in the chemotherapy process or who have radiotherapy to the jawbones,
Implants cannot be applied to the jawbones of patients who are using bisphosphonates, monoclonal antibodies, corticosteroids and immunosuppressive drugs.
In chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, liver and kidney failure, coagulation problems and immune system disorders, our patients' doctors are consulted to evaluate whether their diseases are under control or whether changes can be made in the drug protocols they use, and the implant operation can be performed at the appropriate time.
Implementation of implants in osteoporosis patients
In patients with osteoporosis, as in other patients, the jawbones are carefully evaluated by clinical and radiological examination. In patients with osteoporosis, there may be no melting in the jaw bones. If there is excessive melting in the jaw bones, it is evaluated whether implant can be made with advanced surgery using bone powders or block bones as in all patients.

The most important issue that should not be ignored in patients with osteoporosis; bisphosphonate or monoclonal antibody derivative drug use. Implant application is not performed in patients using these drugs.

Implant life

An implant made in sterile conditions and with careful planning can be used for many years in a healthy way with good oral hygiene and periodic dentist checks. Smoking is one of the most important factors that negatively affect implant health. In addition, individuals with the habit of clenching teeth are recommended to have a plate made after the implant prosthesis is made so that the uncontrolled and unbalanced forces caused by the clenching do not damage the implant.

In cases where the bone is not sufficiently fused, the implant is removed, the bone is cleaned, and the bone process can be tried again in about three months.

We strongly recommend that you pay attention to the following for the success of the treatments performed on your teeth and the health of your natural teeth:

Pay attention to oral hygiene. Show the same care you give your natural teeth to the implant, artificial teeth and gingival area. Some specially designed brushes can help clean nooks and crannies around teeth, gums, and metal parts.
Avoid harmful habits. Avoid chewing hard items such as ice, hard candy, and nuts that can break your natural and artificial teeth. Try not to consume products that can stain your teeth, such as tobacco and caffeine.
