Our hospital; It was established in 1845 by Bezm-i Âlem Valide Sultan, mother of Sultan Abdülmecit, and was dedicated to the poor Muslims under the name of "Bezm-i Âlem Gureba-i Müslimin Hospital" with the related foundationname.
Today, Gureba Hospital, which has been the lap of compassion and healing to hundreds of thousands of our citizens from all over the country in its 177 years of working life, which has now become the Bezmialem Vakif University Medical Faculty Hospital, is one of the most important healing institutions in our history.
In our history, a severe cholera epidemic took place in the country and especially in Istanbul in 1826. Thereupon, the Ottoman Government established a Quarantine Administration in Istanbul and personally ensured the treatment of those who came to the city from outside and the detection and treatment of cholera patients.
Although there are contradictions regarding the opening day of the hospital, our hospital was fully opened on Friday, March 24, 1845, as confirmed by the copies of the newspaper Takvîm-i Vekâyi at that time.
